This August 7-9, more than 140 influential writers and thinkers will come together here in Byron Bay for Australia’s largest regional literary event; the Byron Bay Writers Festival. Described as 'An ocean of minds unfolding stories against a backdrop of migrating whales.'
Hot on the program this year: Julia Gillard in conversation with Clare Wright, Tariq Ali with Kerry O’Brien, Helen Garner with Caroline Baum, Kate Grenville with Rosemarie Milsom, and Joanna Rakoff, author of My Salinger Year.
Examinging the challenges and issues that most concern all Australians are a former Prime Minister, her Treasurer, two former state Premiers and the journalist who unseated a Prime Minister. Yes, Julia Gillard, Wayne Swan, Anna Bligh, Carmen Lawrence and Maxine McKew will all be appearing in Byron Bay for the Writers Festival.
Jennifer Byrne from ABC TV The Book Club will be interviewing two international writers:
Nigerian writer Chigozie Obioma whose startling debut novel The Fishermen has received plaudits from across the literary world.
Mexican-based Jennifer Clement whose compelling novel Prayers for the Stolen was shortlisted for this year’s PEN Faulkner Award for Fiction will also debut.
For our younger readers, there's the Kids Big Day Out where children can meet their literary heroes. Including one of Australia’s best-loved children’s authors, Jackie French, ever-popular illustrator Terry Denton and Australian superstar author Andy Griffiths.
